Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: Even with someone like James Gunn at the helm of DC Studios’ creative side, there’s no end to the problems plaguing the DC brand when it comes to the big screen. After the massive devastation of The Flash, apparently, the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, Aquaman, and The Lost Kingdom has its own problems. According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, the film has undergone three re-shoots and multiple test screenings, but none of them are promising. The piece also claimed that at one point there were two Batmen in the film, one played by Ben Affleck and one played by Michael Keaton.
The Challenges of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Lost Kingdom has faced many challenges in its journey towards its December 20 release date. Originally scheduled for December 2022, it suffered several delays during its construction and underwent changes during three leadership regimes at Warner Bros. After the unexpected success of the first Aquaman film, the film was given the green light during the tenures of former film boss Toby Emmerich and DC Films chief Walter Hamada, which remains the highest-grossing DC film of all time.
Principal photography ended in January 2022, but shortly thereafter, both Emmerich and Hamada moved due to a merger that made up Warner Bros. Discovery. Subsequently, the film experienced two rounds of reshoots and inspirational test screenings between the summer of 2022 and early 2023. With the participation of new Warner Bros. film owners Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdie, the editing process saw a shift in creative direction. Despite their efforts, some test screenings still fell short, which led to another round of re-shootings.

Changes in release dates hampered preparations for Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Batman in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, which also had trouble incorporating his character. Ben Affleck eventually joined the re-shoot to alter Keaton’s sequence, but due to the film’s continuously shifting timetable, none of the Dark Knight films was included in the finished product.
What is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom about?
James Wan returns in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, as Momoa once more assumes the mantle of an Atlantean and human superhero. Additionally reprising their roles are Amber Heard, Willem Defoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman. The planned release date is December 25, 2023.
